Pfizer, BioNTech test COVID-19 vaccine in pregnant women

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE have initiated an international study including 4,000 volunteers that will determine the safety and effectiveness of their COVID-19 vaccine in healthy pregnant women.

Dr. William Gruber, senior vice president of vaccine clinical research and development for Pfizer, stated that the results could be out by the fourth quarter of 2021.

Pregnant women aged 18 years and above will be assessed in the United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mozambique, South Africa, the UK and Spain. These women will be given the vaccine during 24-34 weeks of gestation, with 2 doses given 21 days apart. Researchers will also determine if protective antibodies are transferred from vaccinated pregnant women to their babies… (HT – Reuters, February 19, 2021)
