Sense of smell may be altered for 5 months or longer after COVID infection

Researchers from Canada have reported that sense of smell can be compromised for 5 months or more following acute COVID-19 infection.

According to a preliminary report released before the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting, researchers reported that about one in five healthcare workers with altered sense of smell at the time of infection had persistent olfactory changes after 150 days. Overall, 813 healthcare workers with confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection completed online questionnaires and home chemosensory tests an average of 5 months following diagnosis. The average self-reported smell ratings were 8.98 prior to COVID-19 infection, 2.85 during acute COVID, and 7.41 when the participants answered the questionnaire.
