More than 16,000 fresh COVID-19 cases have been recorded by India for the second consecutive day as the number of active cases has increased in 10 states and Union territories in the past seven days.

An increasing count of active COVID-19 cases is an indicator of a growing spike in infections as the fresh cases have out numbered recoveries. In the last week, from February 18-24, Maharashtra saw an explosive surge of 21,358 active cases and was followed by Punjab (866 cases), Madhya Pradesh (407 cases) and Karnataka (379 cases).

India has recorded 16,554 new cases on Thursday and the death count was 117. The active cases in Maharashtra have crossed 60,000 on Thursday, reaching 64,260. The state’s total count of active cases had crossed Kerala’s count on Wednesday as the highest in the country. Kerala’s active case total count has dropped to 51,879 as fresh cases on Thursday dropped to almost 3,677.

Maharashtra recorded 8,702 fresh cases, taking the total count more than 8,000 for the second consecutive day on Thursday.
