A new study, scheduled to be presented at the American Academy of Neurology 73rd Annual Meeting, has revealed that depression and anxiety are associated with earlier onset of Alzheimers disease (AD).

The study stated that individuals with depression who develop Alzheimer’s disease may start experiencing dementia symptoms about two years before those who do not suffer from depression. Additionally, those with anxiety who develop Alzheimers disease may start experiencing dementia symptoms about three years earlier than those who do not have the condition.

Besides depression and anxiety, investigators also screened for a history of bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia. Individuals with only one disorder experienced symptoms about 1.5 years earlier than those with no psychiatric disorders. Those with two psychiatric disorders developed symptoms 3.3 years before those with no psychiatric disorders.
