First COVAX vaccine doses against COVID-19 administered in Africa

With the global rollout of COVAX vaccines gaining pace, the first COVID-19 vaccination campaigns in Africa with the COVAX doses started on March 1 in Ghana and Côte dIvoire. 

These are among the first vaccination campaigns that are using doses provided by the COVAX Facility’s Advanced Market Commitment (AMC). Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire received vaccine deliveries last week. Ghana received 600,000 doses on February 24 and Côte d’Ivoire received 504,000 doses two days later. Both countries have received the AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India (SII). Around 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines are intended to be delivered under COVAX by the end of this year, which includes at least 1.3 billion doses to the 92 economies that are eligible for support through the COVAX AMC… (UNICEF, March 1, 2021)
