Global breast cancer initiative introduced by WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced a new collaborative effort, called the Global Breast Cancer Initiative that aims to decrease global breast cancer mortality by 2.5% per year until 2040, thus aiming to avert an estimated 2.5 million deaths.  

Dr Bente Mikkelsen, Director of the Department of Noncommunicable Diseases at WHO, stated that despite considerable progress made in reducing mortality associated with breast cancer in several high-income countries over the last two decades, there has been little progress in low-and middle-income countries. The higher mortality seen in lower-income countries has been due to late-stage diagnosis and inadequate access to quality care. Breast cancer survival after five years of diagnosis is over 80% in most high-income countries, while it is 66% in India and only 40% in South Africa… (WHO, March 8, 2021)
