'Double mutant' COVID-19 variant detected in India

A new ‘double mutant’ variant of the coronavirus has been identified in India. Officials are evaluating if the variant that has two mutations together in the same virus, may be more infectious. 

Additionally, around 10,787 samples from 18 states also showed 771 cases of known variants, including 736 cases of the UK variant, 34 of the South African and one of the Brazilian variant. According to officials, the variants do not seem to be linked to a surge in cases in India.

According to the Indian government, an analysis of the samples collected from Maharashtra demonstrated a rise in the fraction of samples with the E484Q and L452R mutations, compared with December 2020. The Health Ministry stated that such double mutations confer immune evasion and increased infectivity… (BBC, March 24, 2021)
