India recorded 53,364 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the highest single-day count in over five months. The last time the country recorded more cases than this figure in a day was on October 23 when 54,350 cases were reported. For the second day in a row, the daily death toll in the country crossed the 200-mark with 248 deaths reported on Wednesday.

Maharashtra led the surge in cases on Wednesday with its highest-ever case numbers at 31,855. Mumbai also reported its highest-ever daily case numbers, increasing from 3,514 on Tuesday to 5,190 on Wednesday.
