1508: According to a new study, patients who develop acute kidney injury during hospitalization for COVID-19 reported a significantly faster fall in kidney function and a slower recovery after hospital discharge compared to patients with AKI not related to COVID-19. The increased decline was independent of AKI severity and patient comorbidities, reported the study, published in JAMA Network Open. (Medscape)

1509: A study has noted than lesser than 20% of solid organ transplant patients mounted identifiable antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 after the first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, thus raising concerns about protection conferred by vaccine in this population compared to immunocompetent people. 1510:  A study presented at the Endocrine Societys virtual ENDO 2021 meeting noted that among 708 predominantly Black patients at a center in New York City, those with hyperglycemia, with or without a previous diagnosis of diabetes, hospitalized with COVID-19, had higher mortality and intubation rates. 1511: The tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitor infliximab has been found to be associated with debilitated serological responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in a multicenter U.K. study, with further attenuation in the responses noted in patients who also received immunomodulators, noted researchers. In comparison with vedolizumab, infliximab had an independent association with lower seropositivity (OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.51-0.87, P=0.0027), as had concomitant immunomodulator use (OR 0.70, 95% CI 0.53-0.92, P=0.012), reported researchers online in Gut.
