Germany Stops AstraZeneca Vaccine Use for People below 60 over Clot Risk

Germany will use the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine only for individuals above 60 years of age, stated the government, following several reports of severe clotting.

Ministers of 16 states and the federal health minister stated in a policy statement that those aged below 60 years can decide to take the vaccine but only after consulting with the doctor carrying out the vaccination, following an individual risk evaluation. Chancellor Angela Merkel stated that over recent weeks, experts have recorded very rare yet serious cases of thrombosis among people who have been administered the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The World Health Organization and the EUs health regulator have stated that the AstraZeneca vaccine is safe, but several countries have put restrictions on its use over fear of clotting risk… (NDTV - Agence France-Presse, March 31, 2021)
