23% more deaths in US in 2020, mostly due to COVID-19

There were around 23% more deaths in the United States, than expected, during the first 9 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, and about three-quarters of the deaths were related to COVID-19, suggests a research letter published online in JAMA.

Rates of deaths from heart disease, Alzheimers disease or dementia, and diabetes were also reported to have increased between March 1, 2020, and January 2, 2021, especially during COVID-19 surges. During the said period, the US experienced a total of 2,801,439 deaths, or 522,368 excess deaths. COVID-19 was accountable for about 72.4% of these deaths. The rate of excess deaths appeared to be higher among non-Hispanic Black populations, with 208.4 deaths per 100,000.
