The daily COVID-19 cases surpassed the 1-lakh mark on Sunday for the first time in India. India has become the second country after the US to register six-figure COVID infections in a day.

The country reported 1,03,844 new cases on Sunday, with Maharashtra leading the surge adding a record 57,074 new cases. The day’s case count across the country was over 5,000 higher than the previous peak of 98,795 cases registered on September 17, 2020. The second wave of the pandemic started only about 52 days back in the country, and has already witnessed a higher peak in cases compared to the first wave.
