AstraZeneca Vaccine against South African Variant Could be Ready by End-2021

A modified version of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine adapted to fight a coronavirus variant first identified in South Africa could be ready by the end of this year, stated an AstraZeneca official in Austria in an interview.

AstraZenecas Austria country manager, Sarah Walters, told a newspaper that evidence suggesting that the current AstraZeneca vaccine was less effective against the more contagious variant first detected in South Africa were too small to reach any final conclusions. Walters added that AstraZeneca and Oxford University are working on modifications to the vaccine for the South African variant and the vaccine is expected to be ready by the end of 2021… (NDTV – Reuters, April 18, 2021)
