Undifferentiated fever can be regarded as one of the largest morbidities afflicting the population in primary care settings and the overall healthcare ecosystem in India. They majorly fall into the minor illnesses category and usually treated by self-medication and over the counter treatment from pharmacies. In rural areas, due to a lack of diagnostic procedures and self-limiting nature, they are usually referred to as VIRAL FEVER.

Numrous presentations of Fever-

Dengue or similar seasonal fever

Normal Viral Fever

COVID-19 Fever

Fever associated with cough, cold, and weakness

fever and dry cough without a cold and running nose

Progression

Fever shoots up in the initial three to four days and the patients may test positive for Dengue and other similar strains during the monsoon season

Fever relieves in 5 days and mostly before 7 days. Most patients resume their daily activity by ten days.

Shortness of breath is noted on the 4th or 5th day.

Illness beyond 10 days

Recovers

Recovers

Fever is usually intermittent and even a very high-grade fever that may continue beyond ten days. The illness may present for 15 to 20 days or even longer from the day of onset of symptoms. Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome may develop due to Lung injury caused by an ongoing inflammatory process rather than infective infiltration.

So the continuation of fever and dry cough beyond 10 days needs immediate attention and investigation.
