Informed refusal is the election by the patient to decline an intervention that has been recommended by the physician. The doctor must fully explain to the patient or his/her attendants about the need for the intervention, and the risks, benefits and alternatives to the intervention, and the possible adverse outcomes of refusing the intervention. This must be documented. The reason/s why the patient refused the proposed treatment should also be recorded.
