COVID cases decline for seventh week, deaths do not drop as quickly: WHO

The number of fresh COVID-19 cases reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) has shown a fall for seven consecutive weeks. The agency’s top official called it the longest sequence of weekly drop during the pandemic till now.

As the weekly COVID cases are at their lowest since February, deaths are not declining as quickly, stated WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. He stated that the number of deaths recorded last week was similar to the previous week. He added that with the least access to vaccines, diagnostics and oxygen supplies for those who are critically ill, there is a concerning rise in Africa. A Lancet study also revealed that in spite of having fewer reported cases compared to most other regions, the continent is witnessing the highest mortality rate among critically ill COVID-19 patients… (UN, June 14, 2021)
