More than 100 cases of HINI influenza have been recorded in Jaipur, Rajasthan, with over 10 deaths in the past one week. The spike in the cases is being attributed a new type of H1N1 virus called the Michigan strain.

The Rajasthan government on January 3 sounded an alert in the State after more than 400 people were diagnosed positive for swine flu virus in December 2017.

As many as 241 swine flu deaths have occurred in the State since January 2017. H1N1 is associated with increased hospitalisation and deaths among elderly and young children.

Former Indian Medical Association president Dr. K.K. Aggarwal said: “Though the virus may be less dangerous, it is certainly more contagious. It is likely to infect more people who have not developed immunity to it yet.”
