IVF Babies Don’t Have Increased Risk of Childhood Cancers

A prospective study presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology annual meeting suggests that children conceived through assisted reproductive technology (ART) do not have increased risk of developing cancer later on.

In comparison with babies born to subfertile mothers who did not use ART, babies conceived through ART methods did not have a higher risk of cancer (HR 0.98, 95% CI 0.79-1.22), noted researchers. The risk of cancer was slightly higher in children whose mothers had an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or a frozen embryo transfer, though it was not significant. Additionally, there appeared to be no rise in site-specific risks of cancer in babies conceived via ART compared to the non-ART cohort as well as the general population… (Medpage Today)
