Pfizer, AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccines Effective Against Delta Variant after 2 Doses

A new study published online in the New England Journal of Medicine suggested that the Pfizer-BioNTech and AstraZeneca vaccines were less effective against symptomatic COVID-19 when people were exposed to the Delta variant, in comparison with the Alpha variant of coronavirus.

The decline in efficacy against the Delta variant was particularly seen after a single dose; however, reduction in efficacy was still there after two doses. After one dose of Pfizer vaccine, the effectiveness against the Alpha variant was 48.7% compared to 30.7% against the Delta variant. Results for the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine were similar. After 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine, the effectiveness against the Alpha variant was 93.7% compared to 88% against the Delta variant. After 2 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine, effectiveness against the Alpha variant was 74.5%, compared to 67% against the Delta variant… (Medscape)
