J&J COVID-19 vaccine appears less effective against Delta variant

Johnson & Johnson one shot COVID-19 vaccine led to the production of relatively low levels of antibodies against the Delta variant in a recent study.

The laboratory study has been released on the preprint server bioRxiv, and is yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal. The study looks at a crucial aspect of the immune response, known as the neutralizing antibodies. Researchers at the New York University noted that J&J vaccine produced around 5 times reduced levels of protective antibodies against the Delta variant in comparison to the levels produced against an early strain of SARS-CoV-2. When compared with two doses of mRNA vaccines, the J&J vaccine demonstrated a more marked reduction in neutralizing titer against the variants, thus raising the possibility for decreased protection, said researchers… (NDTV – Bloomberg, July 21, 2021)
