The hospital management cannot decide the type of stent to be put in a patient. Informed consent is required for any procedure and it includes consent regarding the procedure, the implant or device as well as risk vs. benefits.

The doctor’s job is to outline the options along with risk and benefits and involve the patient in decision making. For example, a meta-analysis revealed that cobalt-chromium everolimus-eluting stents are the best in an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Not providing this option may amount to malpractice.
