What precautions can the doctors take to avoid negligence?

  • Every doctor should carefully read the Code of Medical Ethics which is part of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002 issued by the Medical Council of India, including the 2010 amendment to the act.
  • Current practices, infrastructure, paramedical and other staff, hygiene and sterility must be strictly observed. 
  • Do not give a prescription without actual examination. 
  • Avoid giving prescription over the telephone, except in an acute emergency.
  • Do not just go by the version of the patient regarding his symptoms; make your own analysis including tests and investigations where necessary. 
  • Try not to experiment, unless necessary, and even then, get a written consent from the patient. 
  • Consult an expert if there is any doubt. 
  • Full record of the diagnosis, treatment, etc. should be maintained.
