Relapse of Guillain-Barré Syndrome after mRNA COVID Vaccine Rare

An analysis of medical records in Israel has shown that serious relapse of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) following the Pfizer/BioNtech COVID-19 mRNA vaccine was rare.

Among around 600 individuals who had been previously diagnosed with GBS and received the vaccine, one required medical care for relapse later, reported researchers in JAMA Neurology. The patient, with a history of GBS, was given plasmapheresis and recovered without any lingering neurologic symptoms.

Researchers identified 702 cases of GBS from 2000 to 2020. A total of 579 patients received one dose of the Pfizer vaccine while 539 received two doses. The patients were followed for a median of 108 days following the first dose and 90 days following the second. Five previously diagnosed GBS patients were referred to the hospital for neurological issues after receiving the vaccine. Two patients had paresthesia, one had tremor, and one was assessed for a seizure. These patients were sent back from the emergency department within a few hours. However, the fifth patient developed progressive leg weakness and paresthesia, after receiving the first dose, lasting for several weeks.
