The world is witnessing a global crisis due to Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), but little is known about the cutaneous manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children.

A study thus presented the clinical and cutaneous manifestations of children with SARS-CoV-2, thus assisting in the early diagnosis.

It utilized the clinical data of COVID-19 infected (CI) children globally. Data like general information, clinical symptoms, cutaneous manifestations, and laboratory examination results, history of close contact with CI patients or suspected CI patients, and outcome in CI children were all collected and analyzed to obtain a valuable result.

The observations of the study were as follows-

  • Data of 90 CI children were found eligible for the study
  • 59% and 41% of the enrolled children were boys and girls respectively.
  • The most frequent lesion was Erythema>conjunctivitis>edematous lesions.
  • The most commonly affected location was found to be the face, including lips, conjunctivae, tongue, eyes, and eyelids.
  • 73.3% of the children demonstrated a multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C).
  • 81.4% CI children demonstrated fever as a clinical symptom
  • 39.5% of the patients had lung involvement.
  • 65.1% of patients had cardiac involvement,
  • 4.7% of patients were asymptomatic,
  • 71.6% of patients received intravenous immunoglobulin,
  • 31.1% of CI children received systemic corticosteroids.
  • Three (of 90) children were dead.
  • Familial clustering was the most frequent route of infection.

Thus, proper knowledge about the clinical and cutaneous manifestations in CI children will help to prevent and control COVID-19 transmission.
