Coffee beneficial for liver health: Study

A study published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology has shown that drinking more than three cups of caffeinated coffee in a day is tied to less liver stiffness.

The study included data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), in which participants revealed what they ate and drank. Data from around 4,500 patients who were a part of the NHANES study in 2017-2018 was assessed. There was no link between coffee consumption and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), which is a measure of fatty liver; however, an association was noted between coffee intake and liver stiffness. People drinking over three cups of coffee a day had a liver stiffness measure (LSM) of 0.9 kilopascals (kPa) lower than others (P = .03). Intake of over three cups of coffee a day also protected against an LSM of 9.5 kPa or higher, which is the threshold for advanced liver fibrosis (OR, 0.4; P = .05).
