Liraglutide Effective to Treat Weight Regain Following Gastric Bypass

Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, was found to be safe and effective for treating weight regain after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) in a randomized controlled trial, presented at the virtual Obesity Week 2021 meeting.

A total of 132 patients who had lost at least 25% of their initial weight after surgery and then regained at least 10% were randomized 2:1 to treatment with liraglutide and frequent lifestyle advice or lifestyle advice alone. After one year, 69% of the patients who had received liraglutide lost at least 5% of their study entry weight, 48% of those who received the drug lost at least 10% and 24% of those who received the drug lost at least 15% of the weight.

Only 5% of the patients in the control group lost at least 5% of their weight and none of them lost at least 10% of their weight… (Medscape)
