Can sildenafil prevent or treat Alzheimer's disease?

According to new research published in Nature Aging, sildenafil may serve as a candidate drug to prevent or treat Alzheimer′s disease.

A large case-control analysis of insurance claims suggested that over 6 years of follow-up, people using sildenafil had 69% lesser likelihood of developing Alzheimer′s disease compared to those not using the drug (HR 0.31). The drug appeared to be a potential disease risk modifier in an assessment of drugs that might be repurposed for Alzheimer′s disease.

Researchers noted that sildenafil was associated with a 55% reduced risk of Alzheimer′s disease in comparison with losartan, 63% reduced risk compared to metformin, 65% compared with diltiazem, and 64% reduced risk in comparison with glimepiride, after adjusting for age, sex, race, and disease comorbidities… (Medpage today)
