  • Pregnancy can lead to complications in women with heart disease and these complications can be life-threatening.
  • CVD is the leading cause of pregnancy-related mortality in the US and developing countries increasing from 7.2 to 17.2 deaths per 1,00,000 live births from 1987 to 2020.
  • CVD complicates 1-4% of pregnancies with higher prevalence in those with hypertensive disorders.
  • Maternal mortality is high in women with acquired heart disease that presents during pregnancy such as ACS, aortic dissection, diabetes mellitus, older pregnant population, sedentary behavior.
  • Gestation-based approach to breathlessness has to be differentiated from respiratory cause and cardiac causes.
  • Advanced maternal age, pre-existing comorbid conditions, congenital heart disease have increased mortality rates. Dilated cardiomyopathy is an important complication in 1-4% of the population.
  • Preconception counseling, multidisciplinary cardio-obstetrics team are warranted.
  • Patients should undergo ECG, Echo, fetal echo monitoring before the term due date.
