World Health Organization (WHO) declared May 05, World Hand Hygiene Day to motivate and encourage patients and their families along with the health workers to collectively accomplish and practice good hand hygiene and be safe.

Health-care-associated illnesses afflict hundreds of millions of individuals every year all over the world. More than half of these illnesses may be avoided if caregivers washed their hands appropriately at important points during patient care. In health facilities, hand hygiene and infection prevention and control (IPC) help to protect patients and health workers′ health and safety. In this regard, another initiative taken by WHO is to SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands. Hand hygiene is one of the most efficient ways to decrease the spread of diseases and prevent infections, especially in the present pandemic scenario.

This year′s World Hand Hygiene Day theme emphasizes not only how cleaning our hands can contribute to a facility′s climate or culture of safety and quality, but also how a strong quality and safety culture will motivate people to clean their hands at the appropriate times and with the appropriate products.

Together we can bring in a big difference and save many lives just by practising good hand hygiene. (WHO)
