Issuing a retrospective certificate is professional misconduct

A medical certificate under normal circumstances should be prospective in nature, from the date on which the patient was examined. It may specify the expected period of absence from duty due to the ailment of the patient. However, there may be medical conditions which allow the medical practitioner to certify that a period of illness occurred before the date of examination. A medical practitioner must carefully consider the circumstances before issuing a certificate certifying a period of illness prior to the date of examination especially in relation to a patient with a minor short illness, which is not demonstrable on the date of examination and must add remarks, where appropriate, to explain the circumstances that called for the issuance of a retrospective certificate i.e. prior to the day of consultation.
