In India, nearly 20–30% of the fresh cases are caused by the BA.5 variant of Omicron. At present, the BA.5 variant is the most dominant globally. On the other hand, several parts of the country, like Delhi, are witnessing a spike in COVID-19 positivity due to the BA.5 variant. However, there has been no decision or discussion regarding the mixing of vaccines (for the booster shot).

A senior official of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated that the BA.5 variants were found to be the cause of 10-15% of the total reported. These 10-15 % of the COVID cases were reported around two-to-three weeks ago in India. He added that the spike was "less worrying" as there had been "no clusters" of infection being reported from anywhere in the country. He states that as of now, BA.2 variants continue to be the dominant strain, accounting for 70–80% of the total Covid cases. He explained that this situation has been dubbed "a cause of breakthrough infections" because there are no reports of clustering caused by the Omicron variant, unlike in Western countries.

According to the CDC data, the BA.5 subvariant caused two out of every three new COVID-19 infections in the US last week. In India, the latest INSACOG report revealed that Omicron and its sub-lineages continue to be the dominant variant. Meanwhile, Delhi reported 1,372 fresh COVID cases and six deaths on August 7, 2022, with the positivity rate shooting up to 17.85%, the highest since January 2021.
