Patients with type 2 diabetes and periodontitis who received intensive treatment for their gum disease with oral hygiene instructions + scaling and root planing using ultrasound and Gracey curettes showed significant improvements in fasting blood glucose and HbA1c, despite already receiving diabetes treatment. The study is published online January 19, 2018 in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology.
