Timed barium swallow can help in diagnosis of achalasia
As per a study published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, timed barium swallow is a simple and useful test in differentiating between untreated achalasia, esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction and non-achalasia dysphagia. The study proposed a barium height >2 cm at 5 min as cutoff point to diagnose achalasia, while retention of barium tablet alone suggests functional/anatomic obstruction at the esophagogastric junction.
