A new imaging study published online February 26, 2018 in the Lancet Psychiatry suggests that higher levels of translocator protein (TSPO) total distribution volume (VT), a marker of microglial activation (inflammation) in the prefrontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, and insula are indicative of untreated major depression, particularly when such levels persist for more than a decade.
