NIMS doctor found hanging in hostel

A 31-year-old doctor working and studying at Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) reportedly committed suicide early on Sunday morning.

The Punjagutta police identified the victim as P. Siva Teja Reddy, who hails from Tanuku in West Godavari district in A.P. He stayed in the hostel on NIMS campus for a day as he got off work late. He used to live in a rented accommodation in Panjagutta. According to the police, the victim was pursuing first year DM in neurology. After MBBS, he had completed his postgraduation at Andhra Medical College. It was in September last year that he enrolled in the course.

Speaking to The Hindu, investigation officer Srikanth Goud said his friend, Preetam Reddy, was the first person to find the victim hanging in the room. “Preetam was on night duty. Once he finished his shift, he called the victim on his mobile phone as his morning rounds was supposed to begin at 7 a.m. When the victim did not answer his calls, he went to the room and found it locked from inside. When he got no response, he then broke open a ventilator and saw the victim hanging,” Mr. Goud said.

The victim’s father, Appi Reddy, and mother Kavitha are currently in the U.S. visiting their daughter. In their absence, his maternal aunt and uncle arrived at the hospital. The police confirmed that no suicide note was found. The victim’s text and WhatsApp messages have been checked as has been the CCTV footages and nothing out of the ordinary has been found so far.

NIMS Director K. Manohar described the victim a ‘bright student’. The administration, he said, is at a loss to understand what drove him to suicide.Cops have booked a case under section 174 (suspicious death) of the CrPC.
