When can a complaint be filed with the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) against an advertisement?

The objectives of the ASCI are to monitor, administer and promote standards of advertising practices in India. A complaint can be filed with the ASCI if the advertisement:

  1. Is not truthful
  2. Is not based or supported by independent research
  3. Is offensive
  4. Published without the permission of the person, firm or institution
  5. Misleading the consumer
  6. Contains any claim
  7. Describes products as free
  8. Claims that if one product is purchased another product will be provided free
  9. Contains terms such as guarantee up to ….years
  10. Claims treatment for diseases such as obesity, impotence, infertility, baldness, etc.
  11. Derides any race, caste, color, creed or nationality.
