Low serum bicarbonate (TCO2) was an independent predictor for progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD), says a study presented at the National Kidney Foundations Spring Clinical Meeting in Austin, Texas. Every 1 mEq/l decrease in bicarbonate level was associated with a 7% increase in the risk of kidney failure.
