Current diabetes screening criteria that use age and weight alone, as recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force may miss up to half of prediabetes and diabetes cases, according to a study published April 12 in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. Using expanded criteria on the basis of other high-risk factors (gestational diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, racial/ethnic minority, and/or family history of diabetes) may improve detection of abnormal blood glucose levels.

Another study published in the journal BMJ Open shows that researchers from the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville discover that people with a normal BMI but high body fat are more prone to prediabetes or diabetes, when compared with people deemed overweight according to their BMI but have a lower body fat percentage.

Five years after participants of the Hybrid Revascularization for Multivessel Coronary Artery Disease (HYBRID) trial were randomized to CABG with or without stenting, rates of all-cause mortality were statistically indistinguishable: 6.4% for hybrid revascularization and 9.2% for CABG only (P=0.69) as per a report in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions.

The ‘T3’ initiative of the WHO Global Malaria Program supports malaria-endemic countries in their efforts to achieve universal coverage with diagnostic testing and antimalarial treatment, as well as in strengthening their malaria surveillance systems.
