In a viral video clip from Bhind in Madhya Pradesh, a male doctor is seen examining a woman constable while two male police recruits dressed only in their undergarments are seen standing in a line for their medical examination in the same room.

The Madhya Pradesh government was left red-faced for the second time in a week after a video of male doctors at the district hospital in Bhind examining women police recruits as part of the latter’s medical examination surfaced on Wednesday.

In the video clip, a male doctor is seen examining a woman constable while two male police recruits dressed only in their undergarments are seen standing in a line for their medical examination in the same room.

Civil surgeon of the district hospital in Bhind, Dr Ajit Mishra, said an inquiry has been instituted and showcause notices were issued to five doctors. The inquiry will be conducted by Dr DC Jain who will submit his report within three days.

Dr Mishra conceded that there had been a lapse and said, “Now a female doctor has also been assigned the duty and other arrangements made for a proper medical examination of woman constables.”

A total of 217 police recruits had to undergo medical examinations in Bhind, about 500 km north of Bhopal, but authorities did not say how many of them were women.

Inspector general of police (Chambal range) Santosh Singh said, “It is inappropriate. A basic understanding is that a female must be examined by a female. We will have it inquired and will take action against those found guilty.”

Tuesday’s incident comes on the heels another outrage last week in Dhar when newly recruited male police constables belonging to SCs, STs and OBCs were marked with their castes on their chests. A police inspector and a sub-inspector were suspended in Dhar while a showcause notice was issued to the civil surgeon who headed the medical board on Monday after media highlighted the same.
