  1. Long-term use of metformin is associated with a decreased risk for colorectal cancer in men with diabetes, according to a study published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
  2. Miscarriage is so common that it happens to up to 25 percent of all pregnancies, according to the American Pregnancy Association. The news this week out of the National Institutes of Health is that Vitamin D can reduce the risk of another miscarriage. 

Public Health

Coinciding with World No Tobacco Day 2018, observed each 31 May, the WHO is warning that tobacco use and exposure to second hand smoke are “major causes” of cardiovascular disease, contributing to three million deaths a year.

  1. The lack of awareness about the risks of tobacco use, is most common in low- and middle-income countries.
  2. The good news is that these deaths are preventable, and we know what needs to be done - Dr. Douglas Bettcher (WHO)
  3. In China, for example, more than six out of 10 people are unaware that smoking can cause a heart attack.
  4. In India and Indonesia, meanwhile, more than half of all adults do not know that the habit can lead to a stroke.
  5. Calcutta: The owner of any premises that fails to comply with municipal recommendations on mosquito eradication can be fined up to Rs 1 lakh under a new rule that takes effect on Friday, replacing the provision that required civic officials to move court to impose a maximum penalty of Rs 5,000.

  1. In an effort to prevent the destruction of young minds by a faulty Indian educational system that children are thrust into, Hon’ble Justice N Kirubakaran of the Madras High Court has ordered a prohibition on homework for students in classes I and II, across CBSE as well as other state schools across the country.
  2. The Madhya Pradesh Medical Science University (MPMSU) has officially allowed use of ‘Hinglish’ (a mix of Hindi and English) in all its written and oral examinations. A circular issued by the varsity on May 26th 2018 said: “Following a detailed discussion, the board of studies has decided that students of all colleges will have the option to answer questions in their examinations in English, Hinglish (a mixture of Hindi and English) and Hindi”.
  3. In the matter titled as “Devender Kumar Kukreja versus Nufra Khatoon & Others, Mac. App. No. 711/2010”, the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi vide judgement dated 18.05.2018 has held that license to drive Light Motor Vehicle it would also mean authorisation to drive the transport vehicle or omnibus etc. including tractor, the gross vehicle weight or a motor car or tractor or roadroller the unladen weight of any of which does not exceed 7500 kg.
  4. In the matter titled as “Jabbar versus State, Crl. A. No. 1444/2013”, the Hon’ble Division Bench of High Court of Delhi consisting of Hon’ble Mr. Justice C. Hari Shankar and Hon’ble Mr. Justice S. P. Garg vide judgment dated 30.05.2018 has found the accused guilty of sodomising and, thereby, committing aggravated penetrative sexual assault on a 6-year-old boy (who shall be referred to, hereinafter, as‘S‘) and, accordingly has convicted him under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (hereinafter referred to as “the POCSO Act”) and has awarded a period of 15 years rigorous incarceration to the accused.

Allowable expenses

Club Membership: When membership of a club is taken in the name of director, it is for the assessee-company to prove that membership was obtained solely for the purpose of business. Refer New India Extrusions (P) Limited v ACIT 10 Taxmann.com 165. Further entrance fees paid towards corporate membership of the club is an expenditure incurred wholly and exclusively for the purpose of business and not towards capital account as it only facilitates smooth and efficient running of a business enterprise and does not add to the profit earning apparatus of a business enterprises and accordingly CIT (A) was justified in deleting the disallowances of entrances fee made by the Assessing Officer.
