FDA has issued a warning letter to HelloCig Electronic Technology Co. Ltd for various violations of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, including selling two e-liquids that contain the prescription drugs tadalafil and/or sildenafil, leading the FDA to determine that the products are unapproved new drugs. These FDA-approved prescription drugs are not approved for inclusion in e-liquid products sold over the counter and are therefore being sold illegally. In addition, the company is marketing other e-liquids used in e-cigarettes in ways that convey and mislead consumers into believing that the FDA has approved these tobacco products, when it has not. The FDA has requested that the company respond within 15 working days on how it intends to address the agency’s concerns. Failure to correct violations may result in further action such as seizure or injunction.

Intermittent fasting can reverse diabetes: Therapeutic intermittent fasting may help eliminate the need for insulin and other glucose-lowering medications in patients with type 2 diabetes. Findings from three cases were published online October 9 in BMJ Case Reports by Suleiman Furmli, MD, of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and colleagues. The three patients had all been referred to an intensive dietary management clinic and were taking at least 70 units/day of insulin. After several months of intermittent fasting — either on alternate days or three times weekly — all three were able to discontinue insulin while improving their glycemic control. They also lost substantial amounts of body weight and had reduced waist circumferences. Patients ate only dinner and consumed unlimited very low-calorie fluids on fasting days, and ate both lunch and dinner on nonfasting days. Low-carbohydrate meals were recommended when eating meals.

In the backdrop of some oral polio vaccine vials being found contaminated with the type-2 polio virus, the UNICEF and the WHO Thursday reiterated Indias status as a polio-free country. In a joint statement issued Thursday, the United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) said the risk of children getting vaccine derived poliovirus was "minimal" in India because of a high routine immunisation coverage in the country. The two global agencies also asserted that all vaccines provided under the Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) are safe and urged people to get their children vaccinated not only for their protection but also to keep Indian polio free.  (TOI)

Portal for automatic registration of FIRs and action against offenders launched by the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh (Advocate Ira Gupta): Days after the Centre launched a portal where people can file complaints about circulation of child pornography, the Cyber Cell of Delhi Police has registered five FIRs against five websites for allegedly uploading sexually explicit material. Last month, the portal — cybercrime.gov.in — was launched by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, leading to automatic registration of FIRs and action against offenders. The portal will not only help victims and complainants, but also civil society organisations and responsible citizens to anonymously report cybercrime, child pornography, child sexual abuse material or sexually explicit material, an official from the Ministry of Home Affairs said, adding that complaints registered through this portal will be handled by police of respective states and union territories. Three separate FIRs were registered under Section 67 of the IT Act. The investigation officer has sent an email to Google, asking them to provide details of the websites concerned. Police are likely to take legal action against the websites. (PTI)
