In a multi-ethnic study of individuals without kidney disease, high blood levels of an inflammatory marker, soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor-1 (sTNFR-1), were associated with greater kidney function decline over time. This association was independent of previously known risk factors for kidney disease progression and persisted across multiple sub-groups of participants. The study is published October 4, 2018 in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
