Insulin resistance is prevalent in children as young as age 6

A significant percentage of 6‐year‐old children showed abnormal metabolic profiles, including insulin resistance, which increased their risk of cardiovascular disease in a longitudinal cohort study of healthy children, the results of which were published October 17, 2018 in the journal Acta Paediatrica. Fifty-five of the 212 children had one or more risk factors for metabolic syndrome requiring action. Waist circumference was a stronger marker for metabolic alterations than body mass index (BMI).
