GLP-1 Analogue: Extra Glycemic Benefits

  1. GLP-1 agonists are preferred in management of T2DM, weight reduction; they are free of hypoglycemia (used as second-line therapy as add-on + an insulin sensitizer such as metformin; as third-line therapy as add-on therapy to pre-existing dual combination therapy with metformin, SUs, TZD, alpha-glucosidase inhibitor).
  2. Augmentation of the incretin axis by using GLP-1 agonists is a novel therapeutic concept, which is not only antihyperglycemic, but has considerable pleiotropic effects. Virtually every organ system in the body is benefited.
  3. GLP-1 agonists provide CV stability (anti-ischemic, antihypertensive, inotropic, antiatherosclerotic), weight loss, neuronal protection; they also help improve liver and skeletal health and insulin resistance.
  4. GLP-1 has been shown to have a positive influence on macrophage-mediated inflammatory response and tissue remodeling, which may have benefits in suppression of vascular inflammation and improvement in wound healing.
