The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi has asked its faculty to fill a form that asks about details of their caste and religion, among other requirements. The move has been characterized as ‘shocking’ and ‘not justified’ by senior doctors, including the Director of AIIMS-Delhi.

The form was distributed by the AIIMS faculty cell last week and is intended at creating a database of all senior doctors. Besides name and age, the other details that the form seeks include those related to salary and appointment.

Dr Randeep Guleria, Director, AIIMS-Delhi, said that he was not aware of such a form being distributed. He mentioned that no senior doctor is ever asked about his/her caste and religion. He added that at AIIMS, they are not bothered about the caste and religion of any doctor and it is not justified to ask these things.

A senior doctor at AIIMS who received the form described it as shocking. He added that even during entrance examinations, students object to such questions.

Former director of AIIMS, Dr M C Mishra, stated that he has never heard of such a question being asked of doctors. He added that in institutions like AIIMS, we should stay away from talking about this demography.

The AIIMS faculty cell, which is in charge of the administrative work related to the faculty, claimed that the question was added by mistake.

Dr Sanjay Arya, who heads administrative work at the cell, said that the forms were sent to prepare a database of all senior doctors and that there was no need to have details about their caste and religion. He added that the question was added in the form by mistake and he would get it rectified soon. (Indian Express)
