Nagpur: Patient-doctor relationship used to be based on faith and respect towards doctors. However, with changing times, this relationship has seen several bumps and the doctors now feel that the joy of practising medicine is lost.

On Sunday, doctors – from general practitioners to critical care specialists – participated in an interactive seminar organized jointly by Promotion of Ethics and Continuing Education (PEACE) Foundation and the Indian Medical Association (IMA), and discussed ‘Where has the joy of practising medicine gone?’

Critical care consultant Dr Kamal Bhutada, ophthalmologist Dr Anil Laddhad, and president of PEACE, Dr Varun Bhargava, spoke on behalf of doctors, advocate Devendra Chauhan discussed the importance of the legal side of medicine, and orator Anil Joshi put forth the common man’s perspective.

Dr Bhutada said that patients these days are biased that doctors are not in their favor. He stated that patients should understand that no doctor wants his patient to die, but doctors are not Gods. Relatives of critical patients must understand that there is a point when they have to accept death.

Dr Laddhad accepted that medical costs have gone up. He stated that cost is increasing for better services. He said that there are several specialized services available these days and it is the responsibility of the government to subsidize the cost and facilitate the people.

Chauhan said that legal processes may appear as an additional burden on doctors but they come to the rescue of the medical fraternity. He insisted that the legal processes should be followed.

Dr Bhargava presented an analysis of how the doctor-patient relationship has changed over the years. Anil Joshi said that the common man still has faith in doctors but they should work hard to maintain this relationship.
