Bhopal: An orthopedic doctor at Hamidia hospital faced suspension after allegedly striking an on-duty nurse on the face on Friday night. Demanding action against the doctor, the paramedical staff at the government hospital stopped work on Saturday.

Cops at Koh-e-Fiza police station said that a complaint has been filed in the matter. As per reports, the incident took place on Friday night. The wife of orthopedic doctor, Dr Suresh Uikey, was brought in an emergency to Hamidia hospital. Dr Uikey said, “I was attending my wife and there was a long delay in getting assistance from the on-duty nurse. There was no drip tape available. A bandage was used instead. The nurse disappeared for about 20 minutes till which my wife was left bleeding.” While the doctor denied slapping the nurse, eyewitness reports suggest that there were heated arguments over the delay in treatment.

In the morning, paramedical staff gathered at Hamidia hospital campus followed by protests at the police station, demanding action against the doctor. Hamidia hospital superintendent, Dr A K Shrivastava said, “Dr Uikey has been suspended pending investigation. I am not aware of police action in the matter. We would investigate the matter in administrative capacity.”

The protests lasted an hour until the doctor was suspended. Some officials from Directorate of Medical Education also rushed to the hospital on Saturday morning to analyze the situation. They talked to the nurses after which Dr Uikey was suspended. In the afternoon, the paramedical staff resumed work.

Defending himself, the doctor stated that his wife was undergoing treatment for head injury and his agitation was provoked by delay in treatment.(TNN)
