Mumbai: Doctor held for fake caste certificates for dental admissions

A 65-year-old doctor was arrested in Mumbai on Sunday for allegedly issuing fake caste certificates for dental college aspirants. The accused, Dr Abdul Wahab Mirza, allegedly issued fake certificates to students seeking admission to dental colleges.

Officials of Nagpada police station said that they took Dr Mirzas custody from the Arthur road jail because he was wanted in the case. The accused was produced in a court which sent him to police custody for cheating, forgery and breach of trust.

The case pertains to a complaint lodged by the administrative officer of Nair Dental College which was holding an annual common entrance test conducted by the state. Eligible students have to submit their caste certificates for admission to the dental college for masters and bachelors degrees in dental surgery.

The police reportedthat the Directorate of Technical Education had informed Nair Dental College that caste certificates of some students were "dubious". During a probe, it transpired that many students had submitted fake certificates for admission to various courses in 2014-2015. The police informed that Dr Wahab Mirza had taken Rs 3.5 lakhs from a student for a fake certificate.
