The Indian Medical Association (IMA),Kochi branch, has planned to set up a job bank for doctors, as several doctors face unemployment or lessened job options in Kochi.

Doctors accept that there is a rising mismatch between supply and demand of doctors, alsopolarization by city and region. There are places, especially metros, where too many doctors are applying for jobs and there are other places, especially rural areas, where no one is applying because they dont know about the job opportunities around.

IMA Kochi president Dr Rajeev Jayadevan, said that doctors dont have a common listing and hence are confused about the search of employment. An unemployment crisis is approaching.

IMA Kochi is planning to list all available jobs for doctors from across the globe on a common web page for beginners. This will be shared universally and there will be no charges.

IMA has contacted doctors across the globe and asked them to share any job listing they come across in the common web page to make sure that they get maximum job listing.

Kerala has a remarkably high doctor-population ratio. World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends a doctor-population ratio of 1:1,000, whereas in Kerala the ratio is 1:300.In Kochi, the ratio is about 1:200.

There are around 70,000 doctors registered with Travancore Cochin Medical Council (TCMC) in Kerala and out of this, 55,000 are practicing in Kerala. Of the 55,000, nearly 50% are specialist doctors and get an average Rs 1.25 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh salary per month and they are the most affected. Owing to increased competition, many are forced to take a salary cut and low increments.

On Wednesday, labour minister T P Ramakrishnan informed that there are 7,303 unemployed medical graduates in the state. Every year, many medical students pass out from colleges and most of them work in either Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or Kozhikode. Hence, the supply of doctors is more than the demand.

A senior HR person from a corporate hospital in the city said that if one doctor resigns then they get biodata from 5 to 6 other doctors for the post.

Kerala Private Hospitals Association (KPHA) secretary Hussain Koya Thangal, said that a few specialist doctors are in demand. However, the demand for MBBS doctors has reduced, especially in the private hospitals. The number of doctors passing out from the medical colleges each year are much more than the doctors vacancies in hospitals.

IMA Kerala secretary Dr N Sulphi said that lack of jobs and salary cuts is a reality in Kerala and initiatives such as job bank would benefit the medical fraternity.
