Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) has become an integral part of diabetes care. It helps in formulating new drug regimens and optimizing the existing regimens. It can suggest the extent of glycemic variability. SMBG alerts us to the risk of complications, besides improving the HbA1c levels. SMBG helps us recognize the hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes. All-in-all, it improves the quality of life of the patients and increases adherence to lifestyle interventions and drug treatment.
